Grid League 2024 PLAYOFFS – Sharks vs Brigade
In an electrifying playoff atmosphere, the Tampa Bay Brigade and Southwest Florida Sharks faced off in a crucial Grid League match with a championship berth on the line. The tension was palpable as both teams entered the arena, knowing every rep, every lift, and every second would count in this high-stakes showdown.
The Brigade came out strong, demonstrating exceptional teamwork in the opening Partner Forward race. Garrison Matthews and teammates executed their box jump overs with precision, while Arianna Durrum made up critical ground against SWF veterans Derek Anderson and Sammy Nalley. Despite Nalley’s late trip over the box, Tampa Bay secured the first point of the match.
Tampa Bay continued their momentum in Race 2, the Ringer Point Mirror. The Brigade moved like “a well-oiled machine” through the thrusters, maintaining perfect synchronization between male and female competitors. Meanwhile, SWF struggled with timing issues, as their male competitor advanced without his female counterpart, costing precious seconds. Seth Prochaska and Arianna Durrum sealed a second straight win for Tampa Bay.
The tide began to turn in Race 3, where SWF’s Sam Martin showcased impressive recovery skills in the challenging triple unders. After both competitors initially stumbled with the jump rope, Martin regained composure faster than Tampa Bay’s Dalton Herrero, who ultimately couldn’t complete the required reps, giving SWF their first points of the match.
Race 4 brought the Ladder challenge, featuring progressively heavier Olympic lifts. Rebecca Rouse, Tampa Bay’s Olympic lifting champion, displayed textbook technique, but SWF’s overall consistency paid dividends. The women on both sides impressed announcers by handling heavy weights “like cake,” but SWF’s final push from Nick Shappee secured a commanding 94-79 victory, earning them two crucial points.
SWF continued building momentum in Race 5, where Chelsea Raineri’s controlled back handsprings outpaced Hannah Bissett, though Tampa Bay’s close finish earned them a consolation point.
The Female Triad race brought controversy when weights fell off Tampa Bay’s sled during flipping. After review, the commissioner ruled, “Two flips where Brigade had weight fall and one flip where Sharks had weight fall… it did not affect the outcome of race,” allowing Tampa Bay’s first-place finish to stand.
In the Male Triad, SWF demonstrated exceptional teamwork on the challenging 650lb sled flip after David Blatt‘s strong performance on the rings, giving them a comfortable win though Tampa Bay earned another consolation point by finishing within the time cap.
With the score remarkably close at SWF 12, Tampa Bay 11, the entire match came down to the Sprint Relay, worth three points and a championship berth. The teams traded leads through wall balls, overhead squats, and gymnastic movements, with Tampa Bay making up ground during Dalton Herrero’s segment.
In the final dramatic moments, Roderick Holloway of the Southwest Florida Sharks completed his clean and jerks with a “touch and go” technique, sprinting back to secure the race win. “I’ve never felt such electricity come from the grid,” noted one announcer as the Sharks celebrated their victory and advancement to the championship match.
The Southwest Florida Sharks ultimately prevailed in this thrilling contest, advancing to the championship by the narrowest of margins in a match that showcased the athletic versatility and competitive spirit that defines the Grid League.
The Brigade are the official Tampa Bay team of the United Grid League.
