Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the inaugural season of the Florida Grid League, a sports league featuring the fast and exciting sport of GRID. Teams will display incredible feats of speed, athleticism, strategy and teamwork in order to win the ultimate bragging rights and that Championship.
The first match of the season takes place on Saturday October 21st at 6 PM EST. The match will feature the Miami Freaks and the Fort. Lauderdale Lions, taking place at Freakin Crossfit in Pembroke Pines, FL.
The Fort Lauderdale Lions bring a well balanced team led by head coach Jaime Gold, Pro GRID player for the Boston Iron. Coach Gold mentions she and her team captains (Alex Alvarez and Lauren White) have talked a lot about the match format roster strategy for the 11 races of the match.
The Lions and the Freaks met in a pre-season exhibition match in which the Lions came out victorious, but a few controversial calls could have easily swung the match the other way. Coach Gold said of the exhibition match “I definitely saw some things I liked and some things I didn’t… which certainly played a big role in my coaching decisions”, so it is going to be interesting to see how the Lions will take that information and boost in morale and translate it into the first regular season match.
On the other side, we have a Miami Freaks team led by head coach Storm Kaufman. This team is looking to rebound from that exhibition and get a win in the regular season, where it actually counts. Storm has a lot of confidence in his team and chose several largely unknown, but (in his words) “superstars” from primarily his home gym and a few other South Florida gyms. One standout strength specialist, Jeff Ochoa, boasts a 400lb clean and jerk and is poised to play a big role for the Freaks as coach Kaufman describes: “Jeff is an amazing asset to the team. He is a monster lifter who is as agile as a cat on the floor. He may not look like it, but this big strong guy can move FAST! The other major asset of Jeff, is his magnetic personality. Everyone loves his presence on the team.”
These two teams are looking to make a statement in the first match. Both teams are ready. Who will win? Find out on Saturday October 21st at 6 PM EST.
