Grid League – Palms vs The Superteam Vegas Matches 2024
The Grid League arena buzzed with anticipation as South Beach Palms faced off against Super Team, a unique combination of athletes from Orlando Aces, Tampa Bay Brigade, and Fort Lauderdale Lions who joined forces in response to Hurricane Milton’s impact on the league schedule. The match promised an intriguing blend of established partnerships versus hastily assembled talent.
The action began with a contentious Partner Forward race that required a restart after officials determined standards weren’t met during a dead heat first attempt. South Beach Palms capitalized on a mistake by Super Team’s Ryan De Matti during the rerun to claim the opening race.
Super Team quickly responded in the Mirror race featuring hang squat cleans. Despite the Palms’ strong start, a transition hiccup between quadrants cost them valuable seconds. Super Team executed clean handoffs throughout, with the experienced Orlando Aces duo of Ryan De Matti and Taylor Sturgis closing out the race to even the score at 3-3.
The intensity escalated during the Ringer Point competitions. Super Team’s De Matti edged out Brandon Schipper in the 500-pound yoke carry after Schipper developed a troublesome twist in his apparatus. South Beach Palms owner and coach Bryleigh Hansen answered back in the next Ringer Point, showcasing veteran savvy in the double touches and hang cleans race against Julio Delgado to tie the match at 6-6.
The Echo race proved particularly dramatic, requiring multiple reruns after review requests. Technical issues plagued both teams, but Super Team maintained composure through the three attempts, ultimately securing crucial bonus points to pull ahead.
As the match progressed into the Ladder race, featuring increasingly heavy snatch plus hang snatch combinations, both teams displayed impressive weightlifting. Rebecca Rouse utilized her Olympic lifting background for Super Team while Janine Nicole delivered a clutch lift for Palms in the closing seconds.
The final races showcased individual strengths across both rosters. Despite South Beach Palms winning the Sprint Relay finale with first-time competitor Cody Rice anchoring with impressive clean and jerks, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
After ten grueling races testing strength, gymnastics, and strategy, Super Team emerged victorious with a final score of 53-48 over South Beach Palms. The collaborative effort among three different franchises proved successful, with each team earning a valuable point toward their playoff differentials. For South Beach Palms, promising performances from newcomers provided a silver lining despite the defeat.
The Lions are the official Fort Lauderdale team of the United Grid League.
