Artur Cabral has quickly made his mark as a standout Utility Player for the South Beach Palms in the United Grid League (UGL). After joining as a rookie in 2024, his impact was significant enough to earn him a contract extension into 2025. At 6’5″, Cabral holds the distinction of being the tallest athlete in the Grid League, giving him unique advantages in movements like burpee-to-rings, where he famously noted, “I don’t even need to jump.”
Cabral’s path to the Grid League was paved through an impressive volleyball career. At Coker University from 2013-2017, he left an indelible mark on the program, setting the career kills record with 938 and establishing multiple school records including career service aces (156). His collegiate success earned him spots on the All-IVA Tournament Team and the Off the Block/Springbak All-Independent Team. He was also voted the Off the Block/Springbak National Fan Choice Player of the Year for DI-DII men’s volleyball in 2016.
Following his collegiate career, Cabral took his talents back to Brazil, signing professional contracts with Santo André Super Vôlei and later Monte Cristo/Goiânia, where he continued to develop his athletic abilities.
Between his volleyball career and Grid League debut, Cabral built a strong foundation in CrossFit. Since 2019, he has consistently participated in the CrossFit Open, showing steady improvement in his worldwide rankings. His strength numbers are impressive, including a 365-pound back squat, 310-pound clean and jerk, and 260-pound snatch. His dedication to the sport led him to become a CrossFit Level Two Trainer, adding coaching expertise to his athletic resume.
Born and raised in Maceio, Brazil, Cabral’s athletic journey began remarkably early, swimming at just 10 months old. His childhood was filled with various sports including handball, soccer, judo, tennis, and volleyball. At 15, he made the pivotal decision to move to southeastern Brazil to pursue elite volleyball training, a choice that would shape his future athletic career.
Cabral’s success extends beyond athletics. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Coker University, followed by a Master’s degree from Georgia Tech. While pursuing his advanced degree, he served as an assistant volleyball coach at Georgia Tech for about three years, working at both collegiate and club levels. Today, he balances his Grid League career with work as a product specialist for a data privacy software company.
As the son of Wladia Bessa and Helio Cabral Jr., Artur’s international background has given him a unique perspective on sports and competition. His journey from Brazil to the United States, through professional volleyball and into the Grid League, showcases his adaptability and commitment to athletic excellence.
Cabral’s combination of size, strength, and skill makes him a valuable asset to the South Beach Palms. His enthusiasm for the Grid League and desire to promote the sport in Brazil positions him as both an athlete and ambassador for this emerging sport. With his diverse athletic background and proven ability to excel in new challenges, Cabral’s future in the Grid League looks promising as he continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in this innovative sport format.
