Before Didier Yamit Lugo Sichaca ever laced up for the United Grid League, he represented Colombia on gymnastics’s biggest stages. Six World Championships. The 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto. South American Games. Bolivarian Games. A fractured wrist derailed his shot at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo. An injury sidelined him from competing rings at the 2018 South American Games in Cochabamba, Bolivia. But the setbacks never knocked him out of the sport entirely, they just redirected him toward a different arena.
Lugo’s elite gymnastics pedigree runs deep. He started at age 9 under coach Hugo Cesar Giron and climbed to the international level, competing at the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in London. When he relocated to Miami in 2012, the move marked more than a geographic shift. He was offered the chance to represent the United States but chose to remain loyal to Colombia. His wife, Jessica Gil, had just competed for Colombia at the 2012 London Olympics in artistic gymnastics, a household at the absolute peak of the sport.
Over the past decade, Lugo has channeled his competitive fire into coaching. A certified USAG coach for more than 10 years, he earned a 2023 nomination for Best USAG Coach of the Year and carries an FIG (International Gymnastics Federation) athlete profile that speaks to his legitimacy. His Instagram presence (@didiergymcoach) documents his work with gymnasts across South Florida, but his move to the Grid signals something different: the chance to compete again at the elite level.
Lugo arrives in Plantation as South Beach Palms’ Bodyweight Specialist, bringing the bodyweight mastery of an athlete who competed at six World Championships. For a league built on the fundamentals of strength and control, a world-class gymnast stepping into bodyweight events isn’t just an addition to the roster, it’s a validation that elite gymnastics translates directly to what the Grid demands.
