Marissa was introduced to CrossFit in 2014. She had completed her gymnastics career with Temple University in 2011 but still had a competition mindset so she found CrossFit. In an effort to mesh her passions for physical therapy and CrossFit, she went on and received her CrossFit L1 in 2019. Shortly after that, she further bridged the gap and opened her own physical therapy business in the gym where she could train, coach, and treat all in one place!
At just 4’11” and 120 pounds, Marissa Oxenford might not fit the typical image of a professional athlete, but her favorite quote says it all: “Though she be but little, she is fierce.” As the Tampa Bay Brigade’s bodyweight specialist in the United Grid League, Oxenford proves that size is no barrier to athletic excellence.
Wearing #11 for the Brigade, Oxenford has made her mark in the Grid League through standout performances in bodyweight movements. She’s particularly known for her mastery of Bar Muscle Ups, where she’s gone head-to-head with competitors like Josh Rundall, and her impressive Deficit Free Standing Handstand Push-Ups that have been featured in league highlights.
Athletics has been central to Oxenford’s life since age 4, when she first stepped onto a gymnastics mat. Her dedication led her to compete as a Division I gymnast at Temple University, where she served as team co-captain in 2010. Her collegiate career included impressive performances on balance beam, scoring a season-high 9.575 against Penn. Before college, she claimed the title of State Beam Champion in 2004 and placed 6th at Nationals.
When her gymnastics career ended, Oxenford wasn’t ready to leave competitive sports behind. She found CrossFit in 2014, quickly establishing herself in competitions like Wodapalooza, Granite Games, and the Commonwealth Championship. Recently, she’s added competitive jiu-jitsu to her athletic pursuits, showing her constant drive to learn and grow.
Beyond the competition floor, Oxenford has built an equally impressive career in physical therapy. After earning her doctorate from Drexel University in 2014, she founded Redemption Physical Therapy, where she helps other athletes reach their potential. Her own experience with a significant shoulder injury at age 15, requiring labral and rotator cuff repair, gives her unique insight into both injury recovery and athletic performance.
Born and raised in West Grove, Pennsylvania, Oxenford made a bold move to Tampa, Florida in 2021. While her competitive drive remains strong, her greatest motivation comes from a smaller source, her niece. “To be the best version of myself and the best role model for my niece. Period. It is about as simple as that,” she says. When not training or treating patients, she spends time with her dog Arrow, who she calls her “#1 Fan.”
Oxenford approaches recovery with the same dedication as her training. “My recovery strategies are a lot of my behind the scenes stuff,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of supplements and getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This attention to detail shows in her continued success across multiple sports and her thriving physical therapy practice.
In both her athletic career and professional life, Oxenford embodies the spirit of continuous improvement. She describes herself as “competitive, dedicated, hyper independent” with “HUGE dreams.” Whether she’s competing in the Grid League, treating patients, or mentoring others, Oxenford proves that determination and dedication can overcome any physical limitations.
Her journey from gymnast to CrossFit athlete to Grid League competitor, while building a successful physical therapy practice, shows what’s possible when talent meets tenacity. For Oxenford, it seems this is just the beginning, as she continues to push boundaries in both sports and business.
