I Started lifting when I was 12years old, to get stronger for football as a RB, played for 3 years. Fell in love with lifting got into powerlifting freshman year, dropped football for powerlifting and made it to worlds by senior year, got 2nd in worlds. After powerlifting I enlisted into the US Army as a combat medic for 4 years. Got introduced to CrossFit from a buddy in my unit because of gyms closing due to COVID, and I was hooked. Shortly after completing my contract, I signed up to be a Firefighter/Paramedic in my home town.
Oscar Martel walked away from three straight seasons of high school football to chase a barbell. By senior year, that bet on himself had paid off: a second-place finish at the IPF World Junior Powerlifting Championship.
Most kids might’ve called that a career peak. Instead, Martel packed a duffle bag and left for Army basic training as a combat medic. Four years in uniform, pushing strength and endurance in conditions that matter, then back to civilian life where a closed gym and a buddy’s suggestion led him straight to CrossFit. He was hooked.
Now Martel splits his week between the firehouse and the Grid. As a firefighter and paramedic in his hometown, he runs into burning buildings and saves lives. As bodyweight specialist number 22 for Houston Bandits, he brings the accumulated power of an athlete who learned young that strength compounds everything, whether you’re pulling a bar or pulling someone out of danger.
Regular season matches Oscar Martel has raced for the Houston Bandits, with season and career totals.
