I’m heading into my 4th season competing in the League and my 2nd with the Palm Beach Breakers. My athletic journey began at the age of 3 when I started gymnastics; a sport I dedicated myself to for 18 years. I went on to compete as a Division I gymnast at Auburn University from 2018 to 2021, where I developed a strong foundation in discipline and performance. Now, while continuing to compete, I’m also working toward my doctorate in Occupational Therapy to be able to follow my passion to help others.
Sabrina Cheney has built an athletic career that spans two demanding sports, successfully transitioning her elite gymnastics skills into professional Grid League competition. As a Bodyweight Specialist for the Palm Beach Breakers, she brings years of technical gymnastics training to a new and emerging sport.
Cheney has found her niche in Grid League as a Bodyweight Specialist, wearing #10 for the Palm Beach Breakers. Her gymnastics background proves invaluable in Grid League competitions, where bodyweight control and precision movement are essential. A notable highlight came in July 2022, when she competed in a match between the Palm Beach Breakers and Daytona Venom, showcasing how her gymnastics expertise translates to Grid League’s unique challenges.
Before Grid League, Cheney established herself as an accomplished gymnast. She qualified twice for Junior Olympic Nationals in the all-around competition and made it to JO Regionals nine times. As Region 8 floor champion, she showed particular talent in floor exercise. Her collegiate career at Auburn University (2018-2021) included earning spots in the floor lineup and scoring a career-best 9.75 against Missouri in January 2020. While competing, she maintained strong academics, earning SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition.
Growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida shaped Cheney’s athletic path. Her parents, John and Jennifer Cheney, supported her gymnastics journey from an early age when preschool coaches spotted her natural ability. Athletics ran in the family, her brother Dillon played college football. Living near the coast, Cheney balanced her intensive gymnastics training with a love for surfing, developing diverse athletic skills from a young age.
At Auburn University, Cheney majored in Kinesiology/Exercise Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Her experience teaching young gymnasts sparked an interest in pediatric occupational therapy. “I used to always teach the kids and they always came up to me,” she said. “I loved hanging out with them and it was really easy to teach them. I just really enjoy being around kids.”
Cheney approaches competition with focus and strategy. “I kind of take one event at a time,” she explained during her collegiate career. “I don’t go in thinking ‘I want to win this and I want to win that.’ I try to think more on what I’m doing at that time.” This measured approach served her well in gymnastics and continues to benefit her Grid League career.
As an active competitor in Grid League, Cheney demonstrates how specialized athletic skills can evolve and find new applications. Her journey from Junior Olympic gymnast to professional Grid League athlete shows how dedication, adaptability, and technical excellence can open unexpected paths in sports.
