From Bar Star to Grid Competitor: Selena Swanger’s Unlikely Path to the Wolves

A 9.675 on vault doesn’t guarantee you’ll ever touch a barbell. For Selena Swanger, the inverse proved true. After four years competing All Around at West Chester University, where she scored consistently above 9.5 on vault and held her own across bars, beam, and floor, Swanger made a clean exit from the sport that defined her late teens and early twenties. She enrolled in business school. She took an Account Manager job at Kencor Inc. She built a normal life in West Chester, Pennsylvania, until CrossFit arrived.

Swanger joined CrossFit West Chester as a competitor in her late twenties, bringing the strength foundation and spatial awareness that gymnastics had engineered into her body. The math worked. In the 2025 CrossFit Games Open, she placed 2,149th worldwide and advanced to the Individual Quarterfinal, a result that caught the attention of the New York Wolves of the United Grid League. At 5’2″ and 140 pounds, Swanger isn’t built like a traditional Grid athlete, she’s built like what she actually is: a former gymnast with eight years of accumulated training wisdom and a hunger to prove that the sport’s best don’t arrive pre-formed.

Now listed as a Bodyweight Specialist, Swanger carries one additional credential that most 30-year-old rookies don’t: she coached gymnastics at Hanover Gymnastics from 2013 to 2015, learning how teaching amplified her understanding of movement efficiency. The Wolves drafted not just an athlete but an engineer, someone who knows what it costs to hold the line between strength and control.
