Hi! I’m Shay. Im 31 and a resident of Muscle Shoals Alabama! I coach full time at a local functional fitness/Hyrox gym in our area with my Husband Josh. We have 3 fur children Oly, Murph, and Sadie Mae who absolutely run our life! I’ve been doing CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting for almost 4 years. I love anything with a heavy barbell especially if it’s snatch!
Shay Newell’s path to becoming a professional Grid athlete wasn’t traditional. As a rookie with the Palm Beach Breakers in 2024, she stepped into the role of Utility Player wearing #92 after being discovered through her workout videos on social media. Despite starting as an alternate, Shay worked her way into regular competition time through dedication and consistent improvement.
The 2024 season presented challenges for the Breakers, who struggled to find wins early on. However, the team’s persistence paid off with their first victory coming in the final match of the season, a testament to their growth and refusal to give up. As Shay prepares for the 2025 season, she’s taken an active role in expanding the sport’s reach by helping organize the first Grid League combine in Alabama.
Before Grid, Shay built her athletic foundation through dance, which helped develop the body awareness and movement patterns that would later serve her well in functional fitness. She gradually transitioned into weightlifting and strength training, documenting her progress through social media posts that caught the attention of Palm Beach Breakers management.
What makes Shay’s story unique is that she never actively pursued joining the Grid League. “I had no expectations of playing grid ever at all. I didn’t do the trials, I didn’t try out,” she shared in a December 2024 interview. When first approached about competing professionally, she worried she wasn’t ready or good enough, a relatable fear many athletes face when presented with elite opportunities.
Shay lives in Alabama while competing for the Florida-based Breakers, showing her commitment to the sport through regular travel for training and competition. She shares this journey with her husband Josh Newell, who also competes for the Breakers as a Strength Specialist (#59). Their situation as a married couple on the same professional team brings an interesting dynamic to both their personal relationship and team chemistry.
The couple’s connection to fitness extends beyond competition, Josh owns a gym where they can train and develop their skills. This setup allows them to maintain their training schedule while balancing the demands of professional competition with life in Alabama.
Rather than let geographic distance become a barrier, Shay has helped turn it into an opportunity for growth. She’s been instrumental in creating training “pods” across Alabama and Florida, allowing teammates to work together more effectively despite being spread out. This initiative shows her dedication to not just personal improvement, but the overall success of the team.
Shay has become increasingly visible in Grid League media, appearing on shows like “In Off The Bench” and the “Grid and Grind Show” to discuss everything from season recaps to future goals. Her social media presence continues to grow, sharing both training highlights and insights into life as a professional Grid athlete.
In her media appearances, Shay comes across as genuine and relatable, openly discussing her initial doubts about joining the league and the work required to compete at a professional level. This authenticity, combined with her visible progress and dedication to the sport, has helped build a following of fans who connect with both her athletic journey and personal story.
As Shay prepares for the 2025 season, she’s focused on both individual growth and team success. Her continued participation in events like the Magic City Games qualifier shows her commitment to developing as an all-around athlete. By taking on leadership roles in team development while pursuing her own athletic goals, Shay is helping shape the future of Grid League while writing her own chapter in the sport’s history.
