From Gymnast to Grid Athlete: Sydney Pawlak’s 16-Year Arc

Sydney Pawlak spent 16 years perfecting the precision of gymnastics before finding a new home in the Grid. Now, as a utility player for the New York Wolves, she brings that same obsessive attention to mechanics and spatial awareness to a sport that demands both. Five years into CrossFit, Pawlak has learned to translate the discipline of beam work into the unpredictability of the Grid, a transition fewer athletes ever attempt.

Based in Sutton, MA, the 5’11”, 180-pound rookie arrived at New York with a resume that reads differently from most utility players. Her background in gymnastics gave her early exposure to body control, coordination, and the mental toughness required to compete at high levels. That foundation shaped her approach to CrossFit, and now to the Grid, where versatility and adaptability matter as much as raw strength.

This is Pawlak’s first season with the Wolves. There’s limited public information about her competitive timeline or specific Grid results, but her selection to the roster suggests the organization sees something worth developing. For a 16-year gymnast transitioning into team sports, the learning curve will be steep. What remains to be seen is how quickly she can synthesize three athletic identities into one coherent competitor.
