Looking at the two teams, this looks like it will be one hell of a match as both are bringing some serious talent. The Brigade have a number of athletes that have competed either as individuals or on a team at regionals but as we have seen from the NPGL, being a good CrossFit athlete doesn’t always make you the best GRID athlete. A couple of the athletes on the Brigade to keep an eye on are Darren DeRochemont and Abbey Wilkins. Darren has a strong background in football and Olympic weightlifting, making him a clear barbell specialist, but he may surprise some people with some other hidden abilities. Abbey spent a long career as a competitive gymnast where she competed at the Air Force Academy. We anticipate that she will pair her gymnastics with that drive to win from the military and be a force on the GRID.
The Sharks may have what seems like “under the radar” talent, but they may make a statement to dispute that assumption this weekend. The Sharks will be looking to their captains, Tyler Toner and Leila Elaty to keep their team playing as one unit. Tyler has a football and track background which gave him a physically strong foundation, but also during his time playing football he received an award for leadership which may prove even more valuable on the GRID. Leila may be listed as a utility player but leans more towards a strength specialist, which is extremely helpful because strong women on the GRID are gold. The Sharks may have a slight advantage, based on what we have seen in the NPGL, in that they are all local and get to train together consistently. It is hard to show up for a match and have that flow as a Team.
Needless to say it looks like this is going to shape up to be a nail bitter of a match. With this being the inaugural season both teams are going to bring their best to be named the first champions of the FGL. Make sure to check out the match on Sunday.
