Grid League 2023 – Sharks vs Wild

August 8, 2023

In a high-stakes Grid League match that delivered all the intensity fans have come to expect, the Southwest Florida Sharks and Gainesville Wild battled through eleven grueling races at a packed arena. With conference standings on the line, both teams entered the contest ready to showcase their strength, skill, and strategy.

The action began with the Partner Forward race, where teams tackled four quadrants of challenging movements. Derek Anderson and Valerie Gunning set the tone early for the Sharks, efficiently working through barbells and dumbbells to secure the first win of the day. The Wild, led by RJ Hibbard, managed to finish within the time cap to earn a single point.

The momentum continued for the Sharks in the Mirror race, where athletes performed synchronized front squats with substantial weight – 255 pounds for men and 145 pounds for women. Despite strong efforts from Griffin Roelle, Amanda Fischer, and David McKellar of the Wild, the Sharks maintained their composure to take another victory.

In the Ringer Point Race featuring the medicine ball handstand walk, Sammy Nalley demonstrated exceptional control and balance for the Sharks, maintaining a lead over RJ Hibbard throughout the race to extend their advantage.

The Echo Race provided some of the day’s most exciting moments. Nick Shappee opened strongly for the Sharks in the first half, before Quentin Ambrioso showed his bodyweight specialty on the muscle-ups. The Sharks strategically deployed their bonus flag for the second Echo race, despite a momentary setback when Ambrioso dropped early from the rings. Derek Anderson and Sammy Nalley’s efficiency with the 300-pound flip sled ensured they capitalized on the bonus opportunity.

The Wild began mounting their comeback during the Ladder race, where Griffin Roelle completed what announcers called “possibly the fastest in Grid history clearing of all four bars.” Though the Sharks ultimately won the Ladder 86-80, the Wild were gaining momentum.

That momentum continued into the Cluster Ringer Point Race, where Amanda Fischer delivered a clutch performance for the Wild. After completing five clusters at 135 pounds and crossing the finish line with just one second to spare, Fischer told interviewer Cassie: “Coach asked if he should throw the flag and I said do it. I’m gonna die for this team and that’s all I was thinking about.”

The Jack and Jill race required a controversial restart after officials determined there had been a judging error. In the rerun, Samuel Martin’s quick rope climbs helped the Sharks secure another victory, though Tyler Billington managed to earn a point for the Wild with a successful L-sit rep.

As the teams entered the Female and Male Triads, both sides showcased impressive technical skills across multiple challenging elements. The Sharks dominated the Female Triad, but the Wild answered back in the Male Triad with Tyler Billington, Long, and Hibbard working in perfect unison on their handstand walks.

With everything on the line in the final Sprint Relay, the Wild put together their most complete performance of the day. Amanda Fischer’s efficient triple unders and Griffin Roelle’s powerful suicide sprints built a substantial lead that the Sharks couldn’t overcome. Despite the Wild’s impressive 3-point victory in the final race, it wasn’t quite enough to close the gap.

When the final points were tallied, the Southwest Florida Sharks emerged victorious with an 18-16 win, becoming the first team in their conference to achieve a 2-0 record. The Gainesville Wild showed tremendous heart in their comeback effort, but will need to regroup before their next match to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Wild are the official Atlanta team of the United Grid League.
