Grid League PLAYOFFS 2024 – Wild vs Aces

November 6, 2024

In a tension-filled afternoon at the Grid League playoff arena, the Orlando Aces and Atlanta Wild squared off in a match that would determine who advances to face the Southwest Florida Sharks in the championship. With both teams featuring elite athletes and tactical expertise, the stage was set for an intense showdown of fitness and strategy.

The match began with Partner Forward, where precision and teamwork would be crucial. Both teams navigated the box jump overs with attention to strict standards, but it was the Wild who secured the first race after the Aces called for an unsuccessful review of overhead squat standards.

Atlanta continued their momentum in Race 2’s Mirror event, with the 195/130-pound thrusters proving challenging for both squads. The teams remained neck-and-neck through the first half of the race before the Wild pulled ahead during the critical third and fourth quadrant transitions, securing their second straight win.

The Ringer Point race showcased Tom Soka’s strongman background as he made the 100-pound medicine ball tosses look effortless compared to Jazmin Simpson’s valiant effort for Orlando. While Simpson finished within the time margin to secure points for the Aces, Atlanta extended their lead to 6-3.

The Ladder race demonstrated the depth of Atlanta’s roster as they methodically worked through the increasingly heavy ground-to-overhead weights. Blake Kidder’s efficiency was particularly noteworthy as Atlanta accumulated 96 points to Orlando’s 85, pushing their advantage to 8-3.

Facing a growing deficit, Orlando deployed their bonus flag for Race 5’s Triple Unders. Grid veteran Darren Lasso delivered for the Aces with an impressive display of jump rope mastery, finishing well ahead of Amanda Fischer to narrow the gap to 8-5.

The momentum continued shifting in Orlando’s favor during the Jack and Jill handstand push-up race. Despite early even pacing, Janet Durant’s exceptional freestanding handstand push-ups helped the Aces secure their second consecutive victory, bringing the score to a nail-biting 9-8.

Drama unfolded in the Female Triad as both teams battled through overhead squats, toes to bar, pistols, and muscle-ups. A crucial mistake by the Wild, having four athletes on the grid simultaneously, appeared to give Orlando the advantage, but officials determined the Aces had committed a similar infraction. Atlanta received a point while Orlando came away empty-handed, extending their lead to 10-8.

The Male Triad kept spectators on the edge of their seats with evenly matched performances through the first segments. However, Atlanta’s superior control of the 650-pound flip sled allowed them to catch up and ultimately triumph, pushing their advantage to 12-9.

Everything came down to the Sprint Relay, worth three crucial points. Both teams cycled through wall balls, overhead squats, back handsprings, handstand walks, pullovers, dumbbell hang snatches, burpee-to-rings, and clean and jerks with remarkable efficiency. Despite Orlando’s surge to win the final race, it wouldn’t be enough to overcome Atlanta’s earlier advantage.

The Atlanta Wild emerged victorious with a final score of 13-12, punching their ticket to face the Southwest Florida Sharks in the 2024 Grid League Championship. In a match featuring multiple lead changes and moments of athletic brilliance, Atlanta’s consistency across the early races ultimately provided the narrow margin they needed to advance.

The Wild are the official Atlanta team of the United Grid League.
