The Superteam vs Wild | Vegas Matches 2024
In the wake of Hurricane Milton’s devastation across Florida, a unique sporting event unfolded as the Atlanta Wild faced off against an improvised “super team” comprising athletes from the Orlando Aces, Fort Lauderdale Lions, and Tampa Bay Brigade. The hastily assembled Fort-Orlampa squad, formed due to hurricane-related travel difficulties, entered the Grid League match with determination despite the circumstances.
The competition began with Partner Forward, where the super team quickly established momentum. Rebecca Rouse from Tampa Bay Brigade and Taylor Sturgis worked seamlessly together, while Eric Cardona made up crucial time to secure an early victory. Atlanta countered in Race 2’s Mirror event, where Amanda Fischer and Thomas Sroka executed flawless hang clean mirrors across all quadrants to even the score at 3-3.
The middle portion of the match saw momentum swings as both teams showcased their strengths. During the Home Ringer Point, Patrick Long’s confusion about finishing requirements cost Atlanta dearly when he mistakenly performed a 4-point touch instead of completing the required burpee to ring touches correctly. Taylor Sturgis capitalized on the error, extending Fort-Orlampa’s lead.
The Ladder race provided one of the day’s highlights, with Thomas Sroka and Griffin Roelle clearing impressive weights for Atlanta Wild, while Ryan DeMattie and Taylor Sturgis matched them lift for lift for the super team. The technical excellence displayed by Rebecca Rouse in Olympic lifting and David McKellar‘s powerful cleans demonstrated the elite caliber of athletes competing.
Drama struck in Race 7 when Lexie Wohlfort suffered an injury after falling during the chest-to-bar portion of her Ringer Point matchup against Paul Moran. Medical staff quickly attended to Wohlfort as she was unable to continue, giving Fort-Orlampa another point advantage.
The Female Triad event saw Atlanta Wild make a spirited comeback. Sidney Wilson, Vilma Rosario, and Amanda Fischer synchronized perfectly on the final clean element, using touch-and-go technique to overcome the super team’s early lead on rope climbs. However, Fort-Orlampa responded immediately in the Male Triad, with Eric Cardona and Paul Moran showing exceptional technique through the box jumps and rope climbs.
The decisive Sprint Relay featured high-speed transitions between eight challenging elements. Janine Nicole blazed through toes-to-bar while Taylor Sturgis displayed textbook form on kettlebell overhead lunges. Eric Cardona’s rapid rope climbs and Ryan DeMattie’s powerful clean and jerks sealed the victory for Fort-Orlampa.
When the final scores were tallied, the Hurricane-affected super team emerged victorious with an 18-11 win over Atlanta Wild. Despite assembling just days before the competition, the Fort-Orlampa squad demonstrated remarkable cohesion and resilience, earning one point toward the point differential for each of the three Florida teams as they return to their hurricane-affected communities.
