Grid League 2026 – Breakers vs Sharks: One Point Short of the Champs
Match Report · 2026 Season
Miami · May 23, 2026
The stream dropped mid-match. Part 2 picks up after the ladder and runs through the finish.
The Palm Beach Breakers swept all three ringer duels, led the defending champions in the second half, and lost opening day’s final match by a single point. The Southwest Florida Sharks took it 18-17 at the Miami International Fitness Expo on May 23, and the Breakers’ last challenge flag was still on the floor when it ended.
The Breakers came in believing they belonged in last year’s championship and said so all week. For two hours they made the case, short-handed on the women’s side and trading races with the team that won it all.
Trading the first punches
The Sharks took the partner four and the Mirror to open. Haley Booker answered in the first ringer point, beating bodyweight specialist of the year David Blatt in the burpee backflip duel by three hundredths of a second, a result so close even Blatt looked confused. The Echoes split: the Breakers took the first behind Ro Scott, the returning veteran who spent the day playing like two roster spots, and lost the second when the final 205-pound bar slipped on the last rep.
The ladder flips it
The ladder turned on a referee review. Bounced deadlifts wiped three quadrants off the Sharks’ score, dropping the result to 62-46, outside the ten-point window that earns the loser a point. Zero for the champs. Then Evan Newman walked up to a 275-pound bar in the heavy snatch ringer, stuck it on the first try while his opponent faulted out, and the Breakers led a Sharks match deep into the second half, something the broadcast desk could not remember seeing.
Coach Matt Hornaday, the league’s 2025 coach of the year, kept the message simple mid-match: clean reps, hit your assignments, and the rest takes care of itself.
The champs respond
The Sharks took the handstand-walk Jack and Jill and both triads, catching the Breakers’ women at the legless rope climbs and the men at a missed rep sequence on the rings.
But Nathan Cobb, the reigning rookie of the year, won the fan-voted ringer, five 150-pound D-balls over the yoke against Sydney Witter, to put Palm Beach back in front 16-15 with one race left.
“We wanted to see them last year in the championship. So, this is our redemption.”

The final race
The Sprint Relay pays three points to the winner, so the math was simple: take it and win the match. The Sharks broke it open in the middle, on the same pistol thrusters that won them last year’s championship, and crossed at 4:06.91 to the Breakers’ 4:16.47. Hornaday threw his challenge flag on the final overhead squats. The review upheld all four reps. Final: Sharks 18, Breakers 17.
The Breakers leave Miami with the day’s strangest stat: three ringer duels, three wins, by Booker, Newman, and Cobb, and no match win to show for it. They also leave having pushed the champions harder than anyone did last postseason, with rookies like Maddie Butler taking on the heaviest bars in her first match and Andres Montenegro back on the rings after seasons away. Cobb wanted a championship rematch. One point says the rest of the league should want to avoid one.
