Grid League 2026 – Flight vs Bandits: Carolina Drops Its Debut 20-14, but Closes With a Statement
Match Report · 2026 Season
Lakeland · June 20, 2026
Most of the Carolina Flight had never set foot on the Grid before Saturday. They acted like they had. In their first match as a franchise, the Flight traded races with the 2-0 Houston Bandits, swept both Triads, and won the closing Sprint Relay before the 20-14 final went the veterans’ way.
If you are meeting this sport for the first time, so was most of this team. Grid is two coed squads racing head-to-head down an 80-foot floor split into four quadrants that get heavier as you move down it. Twelve races, points on every one. The hardest thing to fake is the nerves of a first match, the music, the crowd, the player one lane over moving faster than you expected. Carolina felt all of it early and kept swinging anyway.
A rough start, then the first race win
The Bandits jumped them. Houston took the opening Partner Forward, then caught a break in the Mirror when a dropped barbell sent Carolina back to the start line for a zero. A missed handstand-walk obstacle course in the first Ringer Point, the one-on-one duel inside the match, put the Flight in a 7-1 hole that mostly held through the Ladder.
The breakthrough came in the Echo, the depth race a team runs twice 45 seconds apart. Chelsea Espe handled the rope climbs like the Games veteran she is, Hunter Williams carried the barbell home, and Carolina took the first round for the first race win in team history. Head coach Cody Loeffler had told the sideline his group felt better on the back half of the card. He was right.
The back half belonged to Carolina
The Triad is the conditioning race, the only one with separate men’s and women’s versions, five elements run to a finish that ends with a 450-pound sled flipped down the floor. The Flight took the women’s, then took the men’s, both by getting their stronger players to the sled first and flipping it clean. Jordyn Hankins was exactly the dynamic athlete the coaches had been talking up all day, and Carolina looked like the more comfortable team down the stretch.
The closer made it official. Carolina put its bonus flag on the Sprint Relay, the eight-element finish where four men and four women each have to complete the Grid, turning the win into four points. Houston, missing the burpee-to-rings specialist it lost in a pre-match roster fight, could not finish inside the cap. Williams closed out the clean and jerks and the Flight won the last race of their first match.
We’re expecting to play and win. And you can see how close we are in a lot of these matches.
Cody Loeffler, Carolina Flight head coach
Loeffler built this roster in under three months, with players who in some cases met on the floor that morning. They lost 20-14 and won four races doing it, including the one that ends the night. Houston was the better team on Saturday, and Houston has been at this a year longer. The Flight have a season to close that gap, and the back half of their debut suggested it will not take long.
