Grid League 2024 – Lions vs Brigade
7In a high-stakes Grid League showdown Friday night, the Fort Lauderdale Lions hosted the Tampa Bay Brigade at the Revolution Live arena, with both teams seeking momentum in the South Division standings. A packed house witnessed a display of strength, endurance, and technical skill across ten intense races.
The atmosphere crackled with energy as the opening Partner Forward race got underway, setting the tone for what would become a back-and-forth affair. The Lions established themselves early with superior synchronization between veterans Austin Lavalli and Marcos Medina, while the Brigade’s Olympic weightlifter Rebecca Rouse showed flawless technique despite her team trailing.
Tampa Bay responded emphatically in Race 2, the Mirror event, where strength coordination with barbell movements proved to be their specialty. The Brigade’s team of Courtney Moss and Isabella Carvalho demonstrated exceptional composure under pressure, maintaining control of their human racks through the challenging hang clean and jerk sequence to secure two crucial points.
The evening’s drama intensified during the Ringer Point races, where controversy emerged in the first attempt between Lions’ rookie Briley Smith and Brigade’s Jake Hagerty. After Smith crossed the finish line first, officials ordered a rerun due to questions about full extension on certain movements. The do-over produced the same result, Smith victorious, though Hagerty earned his team a valuable point by finishing within the time cap.
The second Ringer Point featured one of the night’s most impressive athletic displays when Brigade’s Marissa Oxenford defeated Paul Moran in the burpee backflip challenge. Tampa Bay wisely deployed their bonus flag on this race, converting it into three points instead of the standard two.
“Strategy and timing are everything when using your bonus flag,” Grid League analyst Mark Phelps noted during the broadcast. “The Brigade’s coaching staff made an excellent call recognizing their advantage in that particular discipline.”
The middle portion of the match saw the teams trade victories in the Echo Race and Ladder events. The Brigade’s Arielle Swan dominated the kettlebell snatches during Echo, while the Lions showcased their bodyweight specialists Paula Leyes and Eric Cardona with remarkable efficiency on deficit handstand push-ups.
In the Ladder race, where weights progressively increased across quadrants, the Lions prevailed despite impressive lifting from the Brigade’s Olympic background athletes. This pattern continued into the Jack and Jill race, where the Lions’ handstand specialists earned them bonus points after strategically deploying their own bonus flag.
The Female and Male Triads featured multiple lead changes and a controversial referee call that required a partial rerun of the women’s event. Through eight races, neither team had established a comfortable advantage, setting up a dramatic finish in the Sprint Relay.
The Sprint Relay featured elements from every previous race, testing each team’s depth and versatility. The Brigade’s Garrison Matthews experienced a costly fault on overhead squats, but his teammates’ earlier performances had built enough of a cushion to secure the race victory.
When the final scores were tallied, the Fort Lauderdale Lions emerged with a narrow 19-17 victory, delighting the home crowd and improving their position in the divisional standings. The Brigade, despite fielding several rookies, showed remarkable resilience and technical proficiency throughout the evening.
Both teams now turn their attention to next week’s matches, with the Lions hosting the Miami Surge while Tampa Bay returns home to face the Orlando Breakers in what promises to be another series of must-watch Grid League competitions.
The Lions are the official Fort Lauderdale team of the United Grid League.
