Valerie Gunning, or Val, if you prefer, grew up immersed in sports, splitting her time between competitive gymnastics and soccer. The discipline of gymnastics and the teamwork of soccer built the foundation for what would later become an undeniable passion for strength and performance.
But her athletic journey didn’t follow a straight path. Before CrossFit, she had a brief stint in NCAA diving, testing her skills in yet another physically demanding sport. However, something was missing. The thrill, the intensity, she craved more. Then, she discovered lifting.
“I found out that I really love picking up heavy stuff and putting it down.”
That realization changed everything.
CrossFit wasn’t just another fitness program for Val; it was an environment that pushed her in ways she had never experienced before. The intensity, the challenge, and the relentless pursuit of improvement aligned perfectly with her competitive spirit. She dove into training with the same dedication she had given to gymnastics and soccer, quickly making a name for herself in the community.
What set her apart wasn’t just her ability to lift heavy and move fast, but her versatility, a trait developed from years of training across multiple disciplines. Whether it was Olympic lifting, gymnastics-style movements, or endurance-based workouts, Val thrived under pressure.
Her background in gymnastics gave her a natural edge in handstand movements, and soon, she became one of the fastest and most efficient athletes when it came to handstand walking, a skill that would later be highlighted in competitions.
Competing in the Grid league, Valerie quickly proved that she was more than just a player, she was one of the most efficient and talented players in the league.
At one event, she was faced with a handstand sled drag, a movement typically dominated by pure strength athletes (usually males). As the only female competitor willing to take on the challenge, all eyes were on her. Could she do it?
When she crossed the finish line, she had not only completed the challenge but had set a new standard for grit and determination.
Valerie Gunning’s story is still unfolding. With each competition, each training session, and each personal record, she’s pushing her limits, redefining what’s possible, and inspiring those around her to do the same.
From a childhood of competitive sports to becoming one of the most dynamic Grid athletes, Val’s story is about growth, resilience, and the pursuit of passion.
And if one thing is certain, she’s nowhere near finished.
