Grid League 2023 – Wild vs Brigade
In a hotly contested Grid League battle at the Exactech Arena, the Gainesville Wild and Tampa Bay Brigade delivered an intense showcase of fitness and strategy that kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the evening.
The atmosphere was electric as both teams entered with identical 1-1 records, each seeking a crucial victory to establish momentum in the early season standings. The matchup promised to test both squads’ depth, with nine diverse races requiring specialized skills across strength, gymnastics, and endurance domains.
The action began with controversy in the Partner Forward race when an initial Wild victory was nullified after review showed a player crossing the finish line prematurely. The subsequent rerun saw Griffin Roelle and Amanda Fischer execute flawlessly on the snatch and box jump overs to secure the opening race for Gainesville.
Tampa Bay’s struggles continued in The Mirror race, where consistency proved more valuable than speed. Despite building a lead in the final quadrant, a critical barbell drop by the Brigade’s Wilson forced a restart, allowing the methodical Wild team to extend their advantage.
The first Ringer Point Race further demonstrated the technical precision required at this level. While Roelle completed a clean handstand walk-to-clean and jerk sequence for Gainesville, Brigade’s Aaron Medina encountered difficulties with lockout standards, preventing Tampa Bay from earning crucial points.
Brigade showed resilience in The Ladder, with Lawrence Curry delivering four substantial points in the final quadrant with impressive heavy lifts. This momentum carried into the second Ringer Point Race, where Jess Krezmien dominated the bar-facing burpees competition, winning by multiple repetitions and earning three points with their strategic bonus flag deployment.
The narrowing score created palpable tension as the teams entered the Jack and Jill race. Brigade’s superior coordination on gymnastics elements secured them a victory, bringing the score to a nail-biting 10-9 in favor of Wild.
Tampa Bay continued their comeback in the Female Triad, displaying exceptional teamwork throughout the five-element challenge. Sydney Witter leveraged her height advantage on the 450-pound flip sled to deliver another Brigade victory, evening the match at 10-10.
The Male Triad proved pivotal, with Wild’s superior toes-to-bar performance and skilled navigation of the 650-pound flip sled allowing them to reclaim the lead at 12-10 heading into the decisive Sprint Relay.
In the winner-take-all final race, Wild deployed their bonus flag, signaling their confidence. The relay showcased a complete test of fitness, wall balls, overhead squats, gymnastics elements, and heavy Olympic lifting. Despite starting evenly matched, Wild gradually pulled ahead during the gymnastic portions, with Patrick Long executing difficult ring touches to maintain their advantage.
Griffin Roelle sealed the victory with powerful 225-pound clean and jerks, crossing the finish line to secure both the race and the match for Gainesville. The final scoreboard showed Gainesville Wild 16, Tampa Bay Brigade 11, cementing Wild’s winning record and demonstrating why Grid League continues to captivate fitness enthusiasts nationwide.
The Wild are the official Atlanta team of the United Grid League.
