Grid League 2024 – Wild vs Venom

July 21, 2024

The electric atmosphere at the Grid League arena set the stage for another chapter in the ongoing rivalry between the Atlanta Wild and Daytona Beach Venom. With playoff seeding implications hanging in the balance, both teams entered the match determined to claim victory in this high-stakes encounter.

From the opening race, the intensity was palpable as the two squads battled through the Partner Forward challenge. The Wild, featuring newcomer Sidney Wilson (formerly of Tampa Bay Brigade), found themselves trailing early as the Venom’s Dylan Florentine and Denise Tam established a solid rhythm. In a dramatic turn of events, RJ Hibbard of the Wild crossed the finish line just ahead of the Venom competitor, sparking immediate protests from the Venom team who questioned the referees’ call.

The competitive fire continued to burn in the Mirror race, where athletes faced the challenging back rack movements – 315 pounds for men and 210 pounds for women. The Wild maintained a consistent 4-5 rep lead throughout, eventually securing the win, though controversy arose later when officials determined the Wild had used an illegal player, resulting in a point reversal.

The Ringer Point race showcased individual excellence with the med ball handstand walk. McKellar from the Wild gained an early advantage over Angelina Midas of the Venom. When Midas lost control of her med ball mid-course, McKellar capitalized, crossing the finish line first to secure the point for Atlanta.

As the competition progressed through the Echo races, both teams demonstrated exceptional teamwork and strategy. The Wild claimed both Echo races, though the Venom fought hard enough in the second to finish under the time cap, earning a consolation point. The Ladder race brought impressive displays of strength, with Olympic weightlifter Andrew Mattox representing the Venom while rookies on both sides surprised with their capabilities on increasingly heavy barbells.

The momentum shifted briefly during the second Ringer Point, where Alex Alvarez of the Venom edged out RJ Hibbard by milliseconds in the Triple Touch event, keeping Daytona Beach’s hopes alive. However, the Wild responded emphatically in the Jack and Jill race, with Tyler Billington closing a significant gap before RJ Hibbard completed the final rep with 50 seconds to spare.

Both the Female and Male Triad races saw the teams remain close through synchronized burpee box jumps and rope climbs, but the Wild ultimately pulled ahead in both events. The Venom managed to finish under the time caps, collecting valuable points despite the losses.

With everything on the line, both teams threw their bonus flags for the final Sprint Relay, making it worth four points instead of three. Athletes from both sides pushed through squat clean thrusters, aerials, sled pushes, and muscle-ups in a neck-and-neck battle.

In the end, Amanda Fischer’s powerful deadlifts on the gold Valor Fitness barbell sealed the victory for the Atlanta Wild, who claimed a decisive overall win against their rivals. Despite the Venom’s valiant efforts throughout the match, the Wild’s consistency across multiple races proved to be the difference-maker in this thrilling Grid League contest.

The Wild are the official Atlanta team of the United Grid League.
