Do I have to be a good CrossFitter to be a good GRID player?

No. This is the most common misconception. While being good at CrossFit is valuable for some positions, many of our players do not CrossFit at all, and the vast majority have never podiumed at a CrossFit competition. You never know what particular skill sets a team is looking for and it’s common for GRID players to focus on a few individual skills. If you are attracted to competition in a team atmosphere, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. Challenge yourself and see what happens.

Do I need to appreciate the team experience to play GRID?

Generally speaking, yes. You will have more fun and be more valuable to a team if you enjoy playing on a team. Past team sport players frequently say that GRID is even better than their previous sport when it comes to the team atmosphere. Players that are used to, or prefer competing alone sometimes find it stressful having to coordinate with others. That said, if you think you may appreciate the team atmosphere… GRID is one of the most rewarding experiences possible.

Do I have to be a specialist to be good at GRID?

No. One of the most important positions is a utility player that has a wide range of skills. The difference is that a player is not penalized for having a particular weakness. Players will only be asked to perform what they are good at, as that’s how they will best contribute to the collective team performance.

Do I have to lift crazy weight, or do those crazy flippy things I saw in the NPGL?

No. The best way to think about it is, if there are certain movements or workouts that you are really good at (you usually beat your peers) there is a good chance a team could use that skill set. You’ll only be asked to perform extreme movements if they are in your wheelhouse.

What is the general time requirement?

That is dependent on the team. There will be a minimum of 4 matches this season taking place every 2-3 weeks from mid June to mid August. (details to be announced) You do not necessarily need to be at every match and each match is about 2 hours. Practice and required preparation is up to the team and varies a lot. The chances are good that you will be able to find a team that can work within your normal training schedule, but you will need to speak to an individual team to make that determination.

What are the costs?

The base fee to enter the online testing is $10 and you can access as many tests as you want to take. The winner of each test receives $100. Once you take an online test you are eligible to be signed to a team.

The remaining fees to play in the full season are dependent on the team and how far you get. Teams may invite a player to a paid combine, but are not required to. The teams and League create sponsorship opportunity for players through the player page, and other methods as determined by the team. The most a player would ever be responsible for to play in the season is $250. The majority of players in the League pay less than that and many pay nothing or even make money depending on how much effort they put into finding sponsorship opportunity.

testing rules

➡️ The winner of each test wins $100.

➡️ Test winner is determined by the largest margin of victory by a top performance over the 2nd best performance within their respective gender (could be male or female).

➡️ Any ties will result of a splitting of the prize.

➡️ Performing a minimum of 1 online test establishes eligibility to be signed by a team in the League (no additional combine testing is required, but may be requested).

➡️ Teams will review testing information in reverse order of last year’s finish. Players may receive an invitation to team combine’s or signings at any time.

➡️ Players may submit results for as many tests as they like.

➡️ Anyone can submit results, however, players already signed to a 2019 team are not eligible to win a prize. Their score will be disqualified to find the next winner, should they win.

➡️ ONLY SUBMIT CLEAN REPS – our ref staff will review the winning videos and assess penalties for any missed reps. In addition, teams are judging performance based on application in a match. Sloppy reps are not acceptable in a match setting.

➡️ Winner of each test announced –  2 weeks after test release date (upon test closing), or April 9th (whichever comes first).

➡️ Final results of all tests become public on April 10th.
