Hi! I am a new player to GRID, but have 9 years experience in competitive Crossfit, with my CF L1 and numerous CF competitions (and wins!) under my belt. I love anything with a barbell and heavy weights, as well as odd object and dumbbell work. I am a Pathologists’ Assistant at the Children’s Hospital at WVU as well as a professor in the program there. I perform autopsies and dissect and evaluate surgical specimens for all kinds of disease. Outside of work and the gym, I am a dog mom to a 7 year old Australian Shepherd named Harper and enjoy hiking, paddleboarding, traveling, eating all kinds of foods, and spending time with loved ones. I absolutely love any sort of competitive fitness sport and am very excited to try my hand at GRID League!
Alyssa Hoffman stands out as a rising star in the United Grid League, where she serves as a Strength Specialist for the Palm Beach Breakers wearing #72. Her path to professional grid competition showcases the evolution of a multi-sport athlete who found her true calling through years of dedicated training.
Hoffman’s athletic story began with volleyball and competitive swimming in high school, but it was rowing that first revealed her potential. After being “volun-told” by her parents to join the rowing team in her final two years of high school, she discovered a natural talent that earned her a college scholarship. Following college, she explored distance running, completing several half marathons before finding her way to CrossFit in 2015.
In CrossFit, Hoffman built an impressive foundation of strength and skill. Her numbers speak for themselves, a 330-pound back squat, 227-pound clean and jerk, 375-pound deadlift, and 175-pound snatch. She’s competed in the CrossFit Open every year since 2017, reaching her highest worldwide ranking of 1258th among women in 2022. At CrossFit Ridgeline, she consistently ranks as one of the top female athletes, backed by standout times in benchmark workouts like a 2:13 Fran and 1:45 Grace.
Born around 1991, Hoffman brings a thoughtful perspective to her training. She openly discusses managing anxiety throughout her life and credits CrossFit as “truly the best medicine” for her mental wellness. Her approach to athletics reflects both physical and mental growth: “I really do not like failing,” she once shared after struggling with the snatch movement early in her CrossFit journey. “That moment is memorable for me because that’s also when I realized I needed to change my mindset. CrossFit is very humbling!”
This willingness to embrace challenges extends to her nutrition and training philosophy. “It doesn’t take long after starting CrossFit to pick up on the correlation between diet and performance in the gym,” she explains. Her dedication to proper fueling and consistent training has helped shape her into the strength specialist she is today.
Hoffman’s influence reaches beyond her personal achievements. She shares her living space with her sister, who initially showed no interest in exercise. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hoffman’s consistent dedication to training inspired her sister to try home workouts, showing how leading by example can create positive change.
To newcomers in fitness, Hoffman offers encouraging words: “Stick with it!! It can be intimidating and overwhelming… trust me, I’ve been there. But watching yourself get stronger, mentally and physically, far outweighs those feelings… Do the workouts you don’t want to do, ask for help when you need it, and embrace the momentary suck.”
As she takes on her role with the Palm Beach Breakers, Hoffman brings years of varied athletic experience and a proven track record of strength and determination. Her journey from college rower to professional grid athlete shows that finding your true sporting passion might take time, but the path there builds character and strength along the way.
