Brandon Thayres has made his mark as a key player for the South Beach Palms in the United Grid League. During the 2021 season, he helped drive the team’s impressive run to the South Conference Finals. Despite dealing with an injury midseason, Thayres showed his dedication by working through recovery to rejoin the roster. His presence helped the Palms maintain an undefeated record heading into their dramatic conference finals matchup against the Miami Freaks.
Thayres’ path to Grid League competition winds through several successful athletic chapters. His CrossFit career has shown steady growth, with his best Open performance coming in 2021 when he placed 2,304th worldwide and claimed first place at his home gym, CrossFit 643. He continues to train and compete there, recently finishing 7,418th worldwide in the 2023 Open.
Before finding CrossFit, Thayres made waves as a collegiate diver at Rowan University. During his freshman year in 2011-2012, he quickly established himself as a force in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. His standout moment came with a victory in one-meter diving at William Paterson University, scoring 184.10 points. This performance earned him NJAC Diver of the Week honors. He followed that up with strong showings at the Rowan Diving Invitational, placing fourth in one-meter and fifth in three-meter competition.
His athletic roots trace back to West Deptford High School, where he starred on the baseball team as a catcher. Thayres delivered in big moments, including a memorable playoff game where he launched a towering two-run home run that sparked an upset victory. His team, seeded 10th, knocked off second-seeded Delran 8-5 in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II playoffs. As his teammate Jason Fox recalled, “That was one of those balls where you know it is gone right off the bat… It was awesome.”
Growing up in Thorofare, New Jersey, Thayres developed his athletic skills at West Deptford High School before graduating in 2011. Athletics runs in his family, his brother Joe played baseball at Jefferson University, suggesting a shared passion for sports that helped shape Brandon’s competitive drive.
What makes Thayres’ story unique is his ability to adapt and excel across different sports. From the precise techniques of diving to the raw power of baseball, and now to the varied demands of CrossFit and Grid League competition, he has shown remarkable versatility. Each sport has added new elements to his athletic toolkit, creating a well-rounded competitor who can rise to any challenge.
Thayres continues to push himself in competition, showing that athletic growth doesn’t have to follow a single path. His journey from high school baseball star to collegiate diver to functional fitness athlete serves as an inspiring example for others looking to explore their full athletic potential.
