From West Point to Grid League: The Rise of Cale Layman

In early 2025, the Houston Bandits added a rising star to their roster: Cale Layman. The new Grid League franchise signed the former West Point cadet fresh off an impressive run of fitness achievements. Growing up in Vermont, Layman would drive past CrossFit legend Mat Fraser training in parking lots, never imagining he’d one day become an elite athlete himself.

Layman built his athletic foundation as a multi-sport athlete at Champlain Valley Union High School, playing hockey, football, baseball and lacrosse. While he had opportunities to play Division III football, he chose to attend West Point instead. It wasn’t until his second year at the academy that he discovered CrossFit, using it to rebuild his fitness after a challenging start to college.

That decision changed everything. By 2024, Layman shocked the CrossFit world by placing 7th worldwide in the CrossFit Open, finishing ahead of defending champion Jeff Adler. He dominated CrossFit’s occupational competitions that same year, earning titles as both the Fittest Active Duty Military Member and Fittest College Student. He later added Fittest Firefighter to his resume.

His success extended beyond CrossFit. Layman earned a spot on Team USA for the International Functional Fitness World Championships in Budapest. He won the College Functional Fitness National Championship and took first place at the Valor Games. He even competed at Miami’s prestigious Wodapalooza festival with his West Point team.

At West Point, Layman majored in civil and mechanical engineering while training with the Black and Gold CrossFit team. The academy’s demanding environment shaped him into a disciplined athlete and leader. His Vermont roots kept him humble, when analysts first discussed his Open performance, he described himself as “just some no-name kid from Vermont.”

That humility caught Mat Fraser’s attention. Fraser and his Hard Work Pays Off team visited West Point to train with Layman, forming a mentorship that continues today. “Having those guys as a resource is crazy,” Layman said. “I don’t know how I got so lucky.”

Outside of training, Layman serves as a firefighter and competes in professional bass fishing tournaments. He represented West Point in Major League Fishing collegiate events on Lake Champlain, showing his diverse interests beyond fitness.

As Layman joins the Houston Bandits in 2025, he brings an impressive mix of strength, speed and teamwork experience. His background in multiple sports and functional fitness competitions has prepared him well for Grid League’s unique racing format.

At just 23 years old, Layman has already built an remarkable athletic resume while maintaining his commitments to service. Whether he’s lifting barbells, fighting fires, or casting fishing lines, his dedication and humble attitude shine through. As he steps onto the Grid League floor in Houston, fans will be watching to see what this rising star achieves next.
