From College Gymnastics Star to Grid League Champion: The Evolution of Katie Canning

Grid League Success Story

Katie Canning has become a key figure in the United Grid League as a utility player for the Fort Lauderdale Lions. Her versatility allows her to handle everything from heavy lifts to complex gymnastics movements, making her invaluable to the team’s success. In 2022, Canning helped lead the Lions to their third league championship with a memorable performance in the final Championship Sprint Relay. She introduced a backflip element that had never been seen in Grid competition before, executing it nearly perfectly to put her team in position to win the race and secure the title.

The 2023 season saw Canning continue her strong play as the Lions fought their way back to the championship match. Though they fell short against an undefeated Orlando Aces team, Canning’s veteran leadership helped the Lions win their conference and prove they belonged in the finals. Her decision to re-sign with the team after 2023 shows her commitment to helping the Lions reclaim the championship.

Elite Gymnastics Foundation

Before finding success in functional fitness, Canning built an impressive gymnastics career. Growing up in Massachusetts, she qualified for Junior Olympics nationals four times and regularly earned medals at major competitions. At Temple University from 2008-2012, she became one of the program’s most decorated athletes. Her crowning achievement came in 2012 when she won the ECAC All-Around title with a score of 39.200, the highest in Temple’s history.

Her college career also showed her fighting spirit. After sitting out 2011 with a shoulder injury, Canning came back stronger than ever as a fifth-year senior. She quickly returned to top form, impressing her coaches with her resilience. Earlier in her Temple career, she had won the 2009 USAG Collegiate National Championship in both all-around and vault. She also earned All-America honors on balance beam and collected multiple conference titles in events like beam and floor exercise.

CrossFit Achievements

Canning has steadily climbed the ranks in competitive CrossFit, improving her worldwide Open ranking from 444th in 2022 to 304th in 2025. In the 35-39 age division, she has established herself as an elite competitor, finishing 7th worldwide in the 2025 Age Group Semifinal. She’s also proven herself in the all-ages division by qualifying for Individual Quarterfinals multiple times, with her highest finish of 280th coming in 2024.

As a member of CrossFit Hype in Boca Raton, Canning has helped her gym’s team reach the CrossFit Games Semifinals three straight years from 2021-2023. Their best result came at the 2022 Granite Games where they placed 17th against top teams from across North America. In 2024, she achieved a personal milestone by qualifying for her first elite individual competition at Wodapalooza Miami. Going head-to-head with Games athletes, she finished 34th in the Elite Women’s division and showed her strength by taking 14th in the opening weightlifting event.

The Complete Athlete

What makes Canning special is how she combines her gymnastics background with newfound strength. She can smoothly transition from heavy barbells to skilled bodyweight movements, making her perfectly suited for both CrossFit and Grid League competition. Her teammates rely on her ability to stay calm under pressure, whether it’s hitting a crucial lift or sticking a gymnastics element in a championship race.

Beyond the Competition Floor

While building her athletic career, Canning has also found success in business. In 2023, she reached a major milestone by earning a $100K income ring and grew her business by building a team. She celebrated several personal achievements that year, moving into her own apartment, paying off her car, and depositing $110,000. Her kinesiology degree from Temple has given her a deep understanding of training and performance that shows in both her athletic and professional life.

Originally from Billerica, Massachusetts, Canning now calls South Florida home. She makes time for personal growth outside the gym, setting a goal to read 15 books in 2023 and enjoying trips with friends. Her ability to balance intense training with career success and personal development sets her apart in the competitive fitness world.

Legacy and Impact

Katie Canning’s journey from college gymnast to Grid League champion shows what’s possible with dedication and adaptability. Now in her mid-30s, she continues to improve and take on new challenges. She’s introduced innovative movements to Grid League competition while serving as a mentor to younger athletes. Her story proves that with the right mindset, peak athletic performance can come at any age. More than just her results, Canning is admired for coming back stronger from setbacks and building a fulfilling life both in and out of competition.
