Longtime CrossFit athlete and firefighter.
Max Vargas is writing a new chapter in his athletic career as he joins the Houston Bandits for their inaugural United Grid League season in 2025. While Grid League fans are just getting to know him, Vargas brings over a decade of high-level CrossFit experience and an inspiring background as a U.S. Air Force firefighter to his new team.
Vargas found CrossFit at age 16 in 2011, and it didn’t take long for his natural talent to shine. Within months of starting, he won the novice teen division of “The Gauntlet” competition, marking the beginning of what would become a decorated competitive career. He steadily climbed the ranks in CrossFit, eventually qualifying for the 2017 South Regional as an individual where he placed 30th overall against the fittest men in the South Central U.S. and South America.
His strength numbers tell the story of an athlete who has put in countless hours under the barbell. Vargas can deadlift 560 pounds, back squat 425 pounds, and has achieved a 350-pound clean and jerk along with a 270-pound snatch. But raw strength is just part of his toolkit, he’s equally comfortable with gymnastics movements and conditioning work, making him exactly the kind of versatile athlete the Grid League looks for.
The path to becoming a professional Grid athlete wasn’t a straight line for Vargas. He serves as an Air Force firefighter, literally saving lives while maintaining his training schedule. He’s also been coaching for over 10 years and owned a CrossFit affiliate for five years, helping others achieve their fitness goals while pursuing his own. Currently, he coaches for “The Extra” program, where he emphasizes both physical and mental preparation for his athletes.
Home life for Vargas means time on his Texas homestead with his wife and young daughter. This setting provides a peaceful contrast to the intensity of competition and firefighting, allowing him to recharge while staying connected to his family. It’s clear that family support plays a crucial role in his ability to juggle multiple demanding roles.
In recent years, Vargas has continued to prove himself in CrossFit competition. In 2024, he ranked among the top 1,000 men in the United States during the Open and went on to place 129th in the North America West Quarterfinals. He’s also found success in team competition, helping CrossFit SDA reach the North America West Semifinal in 2023.
As Vargas steps into his role with the Houston Bandits, he brings not just physical capabilities but leadership experience and a work ethic shaped by military service. The Grid League is getting an athlete who understands both individual excellence and team dynamics, having competed at high levels in both formats throughout his career.
For the Texas fitness community, Vargas is already a familiar face. He’s competed in local events like the Texas BCS Classic and trained at various Texas CrossFit boxes including Westside Strength & Conditioning/CrossFit Wilcrest in Houston. Now, as part of the Bandits’ inaugural roster, he’ll represent his home state on a professional stage.
The Houston Bandits signed Vargas as a “Utility Player,” recognizing his ability to handle multiple roles on the Grid court. His background in team competitions and experience with fast-paced, varied workouts should translate well to the Grid League’s unique format. As the 2025 season approaches, Vargas stands ready to prove himself in yet another arena, adding “professional Grid athlete” to his already impressive resume.
