32 years old, head coach at Derive CrossFit. Played college and professional football. Been doing CrossFit for 5 years.
Rafael Gallo was born on March 3, 1992, in Ontario, Canada, though he was raised in Houston, Texas. The youngest of three brothers, Gallo grew up in a competitive household with parents Roque and Ana-Silvia Gallo, who passed down their Salvadoran heritage. His upbringing was rich in culture, he learned both English and Spanish, embracing his multicultural background which would later shape his athletic career.
At Mayde Creek High School, Gallo quickly made his mark as a standout athlete. He earned first-team All-District honors twice in football and was named team MVP his senior year. His strength showed early, he competed on the school’s powerlifting team that placed second in the state. Beyond sports, Gallo proved himself in the classroom, making the honor roll during his junior and senior years.
His football career continued at the college level, starting at Abilene Christian University where he spent his freshman year as a redshirt. Seeking more playing time, he transferred to McMurry University, where he found his groove. At 6’0″ and 280 pounds, Gallo became a reliable force on the offensive line, starting 16 games over the 2012 and 2013 seasons. His durability and strength made him a key protector for the War Hawks’ offense.
After college, Gallo discovered CrossFit in 2017, and his athletic career took an unexpected turn. His football strength translated well to this new sport, but he had to develop entirely new skills. He worked tirelessly on Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics movements, building an impressive set of personal records: a 505-pound back squat, 600-pound deadlift, and a 350-pound clean and jerk. This combination of strength and skill helped him earn the title “Fittest in El Salvador” twice, in 2021 and 2023, representing his family’s homeland.
While competing, Gallo found his calling as a coach. He earned his CrossFit Level-2 certification and became the head coach at Derive CrossFit in Houston. His approach to coaching mixed his competitive experience with a teacher’s patience. Gallo didn’t just lead classes, he helped build a community. His success in coaching led to part ownership in the gym, turning his passion into a career.
In late 2024, Gallo’s versatility caught the attention of the United Grid League’s newest team, the Houston Bandits. They signed him as a utility player, someone who could handle both heavy lifting and complex gymnastics movements. The Bandits recognized that Gallo’s unique background in football, CrossFit, and coaching made him ideal for their team-based competition format. Though 2025 will be his rookie season, expectations are high for his impact on the league.
As Gallo prepares for his first Grid League season, his journey from football lineman to functional fitness athlete shows how versatility and dedication can open unexpected doors. The Houston Bandits are building their strategy around his unique abilities, and his coaching experience makes him a natural leader in the locker room. While his Grid League story is just beginning, Gallo’s track record suggests he’ll make the most of this new opportunity.
His story isn’t just about athletic achievement, it’s about constantly evolving and finding new ways to challenge himself. From the football field to the CrossFit gym, and now to the Grid League arena, Rafael Gallo continues to prove that with hard work and adaptability, there’s always room for growth in athletics.
