I’m a new player to the Houston bandits I come from a Crossfit background
When the Houston Bandits announced their newest utility player for the 2025 Grid League season, they weren’t just getting an athlete, they were getting a firefighter who saves lives by day and breaks records by night. Shantel Lund, fresh off setting national records with Team USA in the Firefighter Challenge, is bringing her unique blend of strength and speed to the Grid.
As a rookie on the Houston Bandits’ inaugural roster, Lund represents the type of multi-talented athlete the Grid League aims to showcase. Her path to the Grid was paved through CrossFit competitions, where she climbed from 13,921st worldwide in 2021 to 1,390th by 2025. That improvement showed not just in rankings but in competition, she advanced to CrossFit Quarterfinals in 2022 and 2023, then made it to North America West Semifinals with her team in 2024.
But it was in the Firefighter Challenge where Lund truly made her mark. In her very first year competing, she won the 2023 U.S. National Championship in the Female Individual Under-40 division. The event, often called “the toughest two minutes in sports,” has competitors racing through firefighting tasks in full gear. Lund didn’t just win, she set a national record in the tandem event and earned entry into the prestigious “Lion’s Den” for elite times.
Her dominance continued into 2024 as she collected more records: Southwest Regional champion, Texas state record holder, and multiple first-place finishes in team events. Representing Team USA at the World Firefighter Challenge, she proved she could compete with the best globally.
When she’s not training or competing, Lund serves as a Fire Captain with the Port of Houston Fire Department. She works 24-hour shifts on the department’s fireboats, responding to maritime emergencies along the busy Houston Ship Channel. It’s a job that demands peak physical condition, something Lund takes seriously.
“Staying fit in the fire service is one of the most important things,” she says. “It’s something we can control to be better at our jobs.”
Her path to firefighting started in an unexpected place, the gold mines of Elko, Nevada. Fresh out of high school, Lund worked in the mines and joined their rescue team, discovering a passion for emergency response. This led her to West Metro Fire Academy in Colorado, and eventually to her position in Houston around 2020.
As a woman in traditionally male-dominated fields, Lund has focused on letting her performance speak for itself. “We pull our own weight,” she says about women in firefighting. Rather than just talking about breaking barriers, she simply breaks records.
Her approach has earned respect across multiple communities. Fellow firefighters celebrate her competitive success. CrossFit athletes admire her balance of serious training with a demanding career. And now the Grid League has taken notice of her rare combination of skills.
Despite her intense schedule, Lund maintains perspective through faith and family values. She’s known for bringing her dog on adventures between training sessions and encouraging others to “take the trip.” Her social media shows someone who works incredibly hard but doesn’t take herself too seriously.
She’s built partnerships with brands like Dash Hydrate and NoBull that align with her lifestyle, and she uses her platform to mentor other firefighters interested in competition. But you’re more likely to find her celebrating teammates’ successes than her own achievements.
As Lund prepares for her Grid League debut in 2025, she brings a unique resume: track athlete turned firefighter, mine rescuer turned CrossFit competitor, national champion turned rookie Grid athlete. But more than her list of accomplishments, it’s her combination of grit and humility that makes her someone to watch. The Houston Bandits aren’t just getting an athlete, they’re getting a leader who has proven she can excel at anything she takes on.
“Go head first, and just do something that scares you,” she often tells others. “You never know what could come of it.”
For Shantel Lund, that fearless attitude has led from Nevada mines to Texas firehouses to the Grid League stage. And based on her track record, this is just the beginning.
